1 Kings 12

Scripture – 1 Kings 12

Observation – 

  • 1 Kings 12:1-24 - Rehoboam and the division of Israel.
    • 1 Kings 12:1-5 - The elders of Israel offer Rehoboam the throne of Israel.
    • 1 Kings 12:6-7 - The counsel from Rehoboam’s older advisors.
    • 1 Kings 12:8-11 - The counsel from Rehoboam’s younger advisors.
    • 1 Kings 12:12-15 - Rehoboam answers Jeroboam and the elders of Israel harshly.
    • 1 Kings 12:16-19 - Rehoboam is rejected as king over the ten northern tribes.
    • 1 Kings 12:20-24 - Rehoboam attempts to re-unify the nation by force.
  • 1 Kings 12:25-33 - Jeroboam’s idolatry.
    • 1 Kings 12:25 - Jeroboam’s new capital, Shechem.
    • 1 Kings 12:26-29 - Jeroboam makes a religion to serve the state.
    • 1 Kings 12:30-33 - The establishment of Jeroboam’s religion.

Examples to follow – Have good advisors or friends in your life.

Examples to not follow – Not listening to those good advisors. 

Sins to avoid – Thinking you are better than God. Worshiping things other than God.

Application – Have both young and old advisors in your life, but make sure you follow the wiser ones.

Prayer – Dear Heavenly Father. Help me to not be like Rehoboam, who had both old and young advisors, but followed the ones who weren't as wise. Help me to follow and take the advice of those who are not only old and wise, but also rooted in your word. Amen.
