Matthew 8-9

 Scripture – Matthew 8-9

Observation – 

  • Matthew 8:1-4 - Jesus heals the leper
    • Matthew 8:1-2 - The leper makes a request
    • Matthew 8:3 - Jesus touches the leper and heals him
    • Matthew 8:4 - Jesus commands the man to tell the priests only
  • Matthew 8:5-13 - Jesus heals the centurion's servant
    • Matthew 8:5-6 - Jesus is approached by a centurion
    • Matthew 8:7-9 - The centurion’s understanding of Jesus’ spiritual authority.
    • Matthew 8:10-13 - Jesus praises the centurion's faith and heals his servant
  • Matthew 8:14-17 - More suffering people are healed
    • Matthew 8:14-15 - Jesus heals Peter's mother in law
    • Matthew 8:16-17 - Jesus, delivers many from sickness and demonic possession.
  • Matthew 8:18-22 - Jesus teaches about discipleship
    • Matthew 8:18-20 - Jesus speaks to a follower about the cost in following Him.
    • Matthew 8:21-22 - Jesus speaks to another follower about the importance of following Him.
  • Matthew 8:23-27 - Jesus shows his power over the wind and the waves
    • Matthew 8:23-25 - A storm arrives on the sea of Galilee
    • Matthew 8:26-27 - Jesus displays authority over creation
  • Matthew 8:28-34 - Jesus' power over demonic spirits
    • Matthew 8:28-29 - Jesus meets two demon-possessed men 
    • Matthew 8:30-32 - Jesus casts the demons into a herd of swine.
    • Matthew 8:33-34 - The people asks Jesus to leave
  • Matthew 9:1-8 - A paralyzed man is healed and forgiven.
    • Matthew 9:1-2 - A paralytic is brought to Jesus
    • Matthew 9:3 - The reaction of the religious leaders
    • Matthew 9:4-5 - Jesus reads the evil hearts of the scribes and asks a question.
    • Matthew 9:6-8 - Jesus asserts His authority over both sin and disease.
  • Matthew 9:9-13 - The call of Matthew
    • Matthew 9:9 - Matthew obeys Jesus’ call to come follow Him.
    • Matthew 9:10-13 - Jesus eats with tax collectors and sinners
  • Matthew 9:14-17 - The difference between the new and old covenants
    • Matthew 9:14 - The disciples of John ask Jesus why they don't fast as they do.
    • Matthew 9:15-17 - Things are different because the Messiah is here
  • Matthew 9:18-26 - Two people are healed
    • Matthew 9:18-19 - A ruler in the area asks Jesus to heal his daughter
    • Matthew 9:20-22 - A woman is healed by Jesus by touching Him
    • Matthew 9:23-26 - Jesus raises the girl from the dead despite being mocked
  • Matthew 9:27-38 - 3 more accounts of healing
    • Matthew 9:27-31 - Jesus heals two blind men
    • Matthew 9:32-34 - A mute man is healed
    • Matthew 9:35-38 - Jesus’ compassion on the multitudes.

Application – Jesus has power over: the wind and waves, demons, sickness, death, blindness, broken souls, aches and pains.

Prayer – Dear God. You have power over everything. You have power over the whole world and everything in it. Therefore, I don't need to be afraid of the things around me. Because I know you are watching me and I know you are there to help me. Amen.

Sins to avoid – Failing to see that God is with you.
