Matthew 19-20

 Scripture – Matthew 19-20

Observation – 

  • Matthew 19:1-15 - Jesus teaches on marriage, divorce, and sexual purity
    • Matthew 19:1-2 - Jesus heads towards Judea and Jerusalem.
    • Matthew 19:3 - The Pharisees attempt to test Jesus.
    • Matthew 19:4-6 - Jesus’ first answer to the Pharisees: get back to marriage.
    • Matthew 19:7-9 - The Moses controversy: Jesus’ second answer.
    • Matthew 19:10-12 - The disciples ask about marriage and sexual purity
    • Matthew 19:13-15 - Jesus blessed the little children
  • Matthew 19:16-30 - Jesus teaches on riches and following Him.
    • Matthew 19:16-17 - A man asks Jesus about gaining eternal life.
    • Matthew 19:18-20 - Jesus tests him by the law that deals with man's relationship to men
    • Matthew 19:21-22 - Jesus tests him by the law that deals with man's relationship to God
    • Mathew 19:23-26 - Riches as an obstacle to the kingdom
    • Matthew 19:27-30 - Peter’s blunt question: What do we get for following You?
  • Matthew 20:1-16 - The parable of the workers in the vineyard.
    • Matthew 20:1-2 - A landowner’s workers early in the morning.
    • Matthew 20:3-7 - Through the day, the landowner continues to hire workers.
    • Matthew 20:8-10 - The landowner pays his workers.
    • Matthew 20:11-15 - The complaint of the early workers.
    • Matthew 20:16 - The parable applied: the principle of God’s reward.
  • Matthew 20:17-28 - Jesus teaches about status in the kingdom.
    • Matthew 20:17-19 - Jesus again reveals his fate at Jerusalem
    • Matthew 20:20-21 - The mother of James and John asks for a place of special status for her sons.
    • Matthew 20:22-23 - When you ask for a place of special status, do you know what you ask for?
    • Matthew 20:24-28 - The disciples’ reaction; Jesus shows greatness
  • Matthew 20:29-34 - Jesus heals two blind men
    • Matthew 20:29-31 - Two blind men gain the attention of Jesus.
    • Matthew 20:32-34 - Jesus heals the two blind men

Application – Do things without an expectance of a reward because God will reward you in heaven.

Prayer – Dear God. Help me to do things not for a physical reward here on this earth, but because I want to please you and because you will reward me in heaven. Amen.
