Observation –
- Matthew 16:1-12 - Warnings against the Sanhedrin
- Matthew 16:1-4 - The Sadducees and the Pharisees seek a sign from Jesus.
- Matthew 16:5-12 - Jesus cautions the disciples against false teaching.
- Matthew 16:13-23 - Peter declares Jesus as Messiah
- Matthew 16:13 - Jesus asks the disciples to tell Him who others say He is.
- Matthew 16:14-16 - A pointed question and a pointed answer.
- Matthew 16:17-20 - Jesus compliments Peter for His bold and correct declaration.
- Matthew 16:21 - Jesus begins to reveal the full extent of His mission.
- Matthew 16:22-23 - Peter’s unwitting opposition of Jesus.
- Matthew 16:24-28 - Jesus' call to His disciples
- Matthew 16:24 - Jesus expects that His followers would follow Him by dying to self.
- Matthew 16:25-27 - The paradox of the cross: finding life by losing it.
- Matthew 16:28 - A promise to see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.
- Matthew 17:1-13 - Jesus is transfigured
- Matthew 17:1-2 - The transformation of Jesus before His disciples.

- Matthew 17:4-5 - Peter equates Jesus with Moses and Elijah and is rebuked

- Matthew 17:14-16 - A demon too tough for the disciples to handle.
- Matthew 17:17-21 - Jesus easily casts the demon out.
- Matthew 17:22-27 - Look forward to the death and resurrection of Jesus.
- Matthew 17:22-23 - Jesus reminds His disciples about His future sufferings.
- Matthew 17:24-26 - Time to pay the temple tax.
- Matthew 17:27 - Jesus pays the tax anyway by miraculous provision.
Application – I must die to myself and take up my cross.
Prayer – Dear Heavenly Father. Help me to die to myself. Help me to die to my flesh and my sinful desires and wholly want to seek you and your kingdom. Amen.
