Deuteronomy 11-12

 Scripture – Deuteronomy 11-12

Observation – 

  • Deuteronomy 11:1-32 - Rewards of obedience
    • Deuteronomy 11:1 - Love the Lord your God
    • Deuteronomy 11:2-7 - I am not speaking to those who have not seen God's discipline
    • Deuteronomy 11:8 - Keep every commandment.
    • Deuteronomy 11:9-12 - That you may prolong your days on the land
    • Deuteronomy 11:13 - Listen obediently
    • Deuteronomy 11:14-15 - That he will give you rain and fresh crops
    • Deuteronomy 11:16-17 - Beware that your hearts are not deceived
    • Deuteronomy 11:18-22 - Write these words everywhere and remember them
    • Deuteronomy 11:23-25 - That no man will stand before you
    • Deuteronomy 11:26-27 - See the blessing I give you

    • Deuteronomy 12:4-7 - You shall serve your God
    • Deuteronomy 12:8 - Do not do what is right in your own eyes
    • Deuteronomy 12:9-12 - You shall rejoice to the Lord your God
    • Deuteronomy 12:13-14 - Offer sacrifices where God commands you
    • Deuteronomy 12:15 - You can eat meat outside the gates
    • Deuteronomy 12:16-17 - You shall not eat inside the gates
    • Deuteronomy 12:18-19 - You shall eat them before the Lord your God
    • Deuteronomy 12:20-22 -You can hunt outside the borders if God allows you to
    • Deuteronomy 12:23-25- Do not eat the blood
    • Deuteronomy 12:26-27 - You shall offer burnt offerings
    • Deuteronomy 12:28-32 -Be careful to listen to all these words

Application – Remember all of God's commands

Prayer – Dear God. Help me love you and to follow your commands. Help me to know your word so i can obey it. AMen.

    • Deuteronomy 9:4-6 - Remember your lack of righteousness
    • Deuteronomy 9:7-21 - Remember how you provoked God (Mt. Sinai)
    • Deuteronomy 9:22-24 - Remember how you provoked God (Taberah, Massah)
    • Deuteronomy 9:25-29 - Remember Moses interceded for you
  • Deuteronomy 10:1-22 - The journey recounted
    • Deuteronomy 10:1-5 - The tablets remade
    • Deuteronomy 10:6 - Aaron died
    • Deuteronomy 10:7-9 - The Levites were called to serve GOd
    • Deuteronomy 10:10-11 - Moses interceded with God
    • Deuteronomy 10:12-22 - Fear, love, follow, and serve God with all your heart.

Application – Our past reminds us that we are not worthy of God's help. We should boast in His victories.

Prayer – Dear God. You are the one who is worthy. You are the one who should get all the glory. Help me to praise and give the glory to you. AMen.

    • Deuteronomy 7:5-6 - Tear down the idols
    • Deuteronomy 7:7-11 - Destroy those who hate Him. Never forget He will do the same to you
  • Deuteronomy 7:12-26 - Promises
    • Deuteronomy 7:12-16 - You will be blessed
    • Deuteronomy 7:17-24 - You will not be afraid
    • Deuteronomy 7:25-26 - Burn the graven images
  • Deuteronomy 8:1-20 - Remember
    • Deuteronomy 8:1-6 - God disciplines you
    • Deuteronomy 8:7-10 - God satisfies you 
    • Deuteronomy 8:11-20 - Do not forget what he has done for you

Application – Get rid of idols and temptations. Do not forget what God has done for you. Boast in Him alone.

Prayer – Dear God. You are an omniscient God. You see everything and everyone. I don't see everything, I don't see what you do for and in me. I thank you for the things that I have seen and haven't seen. Help me to get rid of the foreign idols and temptations in the things around me. Amen. 

Sins to avoid – Failing to remove temptations. Forgetting what God has done for you.

Promises to claim – You will be blessed if you follow his commands

    • Deuteronomy 4:3-4 - See how God punishes those who follow other gods
    • Deuteronomy 4:5-6 - Keep the statues and judgements
    • Deuteronomy 4:7-8 - Remember there is no nation with a god so near as the Lord
    • Deuteronomy 4:9-14 - Do not forget what the Lord has commanded you
    • Deuteronomy 4:15-24 - Watch yourselves carefully
    • Deuteronomy 4:25-31 - Be warned of what will happen if you don't
    • Deuteronomy 4:32-40 - Know there is no other God
  • Deuteronomy 4:41-49 - Setting up east of the Jordan
    • Deuteronomy 4:41-43 - Moses sets sanctuary cities
    • Deuteronomy 4:44-49 - Israel takes possession of the Amorites

Application – Remember the commands that God has given you.

Prayer – Dear God. There is no other God like you. There is none as mighty as you. Help me to remember your commands and statues. AMen.

Sins to avoid – Forgetting God's commands. Worshipping other Gods.  

Promises to claim – v40 that it may go well with you and with your children after you,

  • Deuteronomy 3:1-29 - Conquests recounted
    • Deuteronomy 3:1 - Og attacks Israel
    • Deuteronomy 3:2-3 - The Lord delivers King Og and his people into Israel's hand
    • Deuteronomy 3:4-7 - They utterly destroyed them
    • Deuteronomy 3:8-11 - We took land from both Ammorite kings
    • Deuteronomy 3:12-17 - The splitting of the land
    • Deuteronomy 3:18-20 - The women, children, and livestock shall stay in the cities
    • Deuteronomy 3:21-22 - Do not fear them
    • Deuteronomy 3:23-27 - Moses wants to see the promised land
    • Deuteronomy 3:28-29 - Train Joshua and encourage him

Application – Dot fear anyone. v22

Prayer – Dear God. Your word says in Deuteronomy 3:22 that we do not need to fear anyone, for you are the one fighting for me. The glory is yours alone. Amen

Sins to avoid – Fearing enemies when you have God on your side.

Promises to claim – "Do not fear them, for the Lord you God is the one fighting for you"

    • Deuteronomy 2:8-15 - Don't provoke Moab
    • Deuteronomy 2:16-29 - Pass through the border. Ask for permission
    • Deuteronomy 2:30 - Permission denied
    • Deuteronomy 2:31-37 - Moabites destroyed. Booty taken.

Application – God is always with us. 

Prayer – Dear God. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, you are with me. You were with the Israelites when they went into enemy territory. Thank you for being faithful and keeping your promises. Amen

    • Deuteronomy 1:22-25 - The twelve spies
    • Deuteronomy 1:26-28 - Rebellion against God
    • Deuteronomy 1:29-36 - Consequences of disobedience
    • Deuteronomy 1:37-40 - The Lord was angry.
    • Deuteronomy 1:41-43 - They tried to enter.

Application – The people sin but God forgives. Learn from the mistakes of those who come before you.

Prayer – Dear God. I fail time and time again. I fall into temptation, anger, and dishonesty, but you forgive me every time. I thank you for your mercy and grace. Amen

    • Numbers 37:10-13 - They did as commanded

Application – Our earthly inheritance changes, but our spiritual inheritance stays forever

Prayer – Dear God. Your promises are unfailing. You are a faithful God, and you have and always keep your promises. Amen.

    • Numbers 35:1-3 - The Levites shall live w/ the people
    • Numbers 35:4-5 -They shall have pasture lands
  • Numbers 35:6-34 - Cities of refuge
    • Numbers 35:6-8 - The six cities will be cities of refuge
    • Numbers 35:9-14 - You shall select the six cities of refuge.
    • Numbers 35:15 - You shall flee to the cities if you kill unintentionally.
    • Numbers 35:16-18 - He is a murderer if he does in intentionally.
    • Numbers 35:19-23 - The blood avenger
    • Numbers 35:24-25 - The congregation shall decide
    • Numbers 35:26-28 - The avenger may kill the murderer
    • Numbers 35:29-30 - No one shall be put to death with one witness
    • Numbers 35:31-32 - You shall not take ransom
    • Numbers 35:33-34 - You shall not defile the land

Application – God has mercy on unintentional sin. God will punish intentional sin

Prayer – Dear God, you have mercy on all who repent of their sins. Help me to repent of my sins. Amen

  • Numbers 32:1-42 - Reuban and Gad settle for Gillead
    • Numbers 32:1-2 - The sons of Reuban and Gad saw the land
    • Numbers 32:3-5 - We have found good land
    • Numbers 32:6-14 - Moses gives a history lesson of when God was angry
    • Numbers 32:15-22 - You will have the land if you fight
    • Numbers 32:23-27 - Gad and Reuban build sheepfolds and houses for their familes
    • Numbers 32:28-42 - Gad and Reuban get the land. They name their cities

Application – Don't settle for instant gratification.

Prayer – Dear God. Help me to wait patiently for you. Help me to not settle for instant gratification. Amen.

Examples to follow – Don't settle for the first thing you see. There is a greater reward

    • Numbers 31:13-14 - Moses was angry
    • Numbers 31:15-18 - Kill all male boys and all who have been intimate
    • Numbers 31:19-20 - Purify yourself 
    • Numbers 31:21-24 - Purify the spoils
  • Numbers 31:25-54 - Division of the booty
    • Numbers 31:25-27 - Divide the booty amongst the warriors
    • Numbers 31:28-31 - Take some for the tabernacle
    • Numbers 31:32-47 - How much spoils 
    • Numbers 31:48-49 - No man is missing
    • Numbers 31:50-54 - They offer things to the Lord

Application – God gives the victory

Prayer – Dear God, you know and control everything. You win my battles. Help me to glorify you and to praise you for my victories. Help me to boast in the one who is worthy. Amen

Promises to claim – 

Examples to follow – Praise God for victory. Give Him the praise.

    • Numbers 29:7 - You shall not work on the tenth day of the seventh month.
    • Numbers 29:8-11 - You shall offer animals and grain.
    • Numbers 29:12 - No work on the fifteenth day of the seventh month and observe the feast.
    • Numbers 29:13-16 - You shall offer animals and grain.
    • Numbers 29:17-19 - Second day of the feast
    • Numbers 29:20-22 - Third day of the feast
    • Numbers 29:23-25 - Fourth day of the feast
    • Numbers 29:26-28 - Fifth day of the feast
    • Numbers 29:29-31 - Sixth day of the feast
    • Numbers 29:32-34 - Seventh day of the feast
    • Numbers 29:35-38 - Eight day of the feast
    • Numbers 29:39-40 - You shall present these things at the appointed times.

Application – Offer to God at the appointed times.

Prayer –  Dear God, help me to be a good steward of what you have given me. All I have is yours. Amen

    • Numbers 27:22-23 - Moses blessed him

    • Numbers 28:1-2 - Be careful when you offer 
    • Numbers 28:3-8 - How to offer and what to offer
    • Numbers 28:9-10 - You shall offer on the sabbath
    • Numbers 28:11-15 - And at the beginning of the month

    • Numbers 28:26-31 - Instructions for the feast 

Application – Accept your consequences. It is okay to ask with the right attitude
